La formación geológica de las Islas Canarias
Abstracts English Abstract The Canary Islands archipelago presents a complex volcanic history that defies a single explanatory model. Classical hotspot theory, which attributes island formation to a deep mantle plume (Morgan, 1971), fails to account for simultaneous activity across multiple islands and anomalous uplift in eastern isles. Alternative tectonic frameworks link volcanism to lithospheric fractures propagated from the Atlas Mountains (Anguita & Hernán, 2000) or to block uplift driven by compressional tectonics (Araña & Ortiz, 1991). Recent seismic tomography and geochemical data support hybrid models involving small-scale mantle convection, dual plume pulses, and lithospheric dripping. This article critically reviews each hypothesis, integrates petrological, geochronological, and geophysical evidence, and outlines unresolved questions about magma sources, activation timing, and lithosphere–asthenosphere interactions.
