Escaleritas: historia, evolución y realidad demográfica de un barrio emblemático de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
Abstract (English) Escaleritas, in the Ciudad Alta of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, exemplifies mid-20th-century urban expansion driven by social housing policy and post-war reconstruction. Originating in the 1940s as a Protective Housing Estate, it combined 422 dwellings for working families with public amenities. Between the 1950s and 1960s it expanded into adjacent sectors, and in the 2000s benefitted from an Integral Rehabilitation Area (ARI) that modernized 700+ homes. Demographic growth, identity bonds and recent pedestrianisation of Plaza de Argentina reflect ongoing adaptation to contemporary challenges. This article provides a balanced historical narrative, integrates demographic and spatial data, and highlights local anecdotes—such as the old hillside staircases that gave the barrio its name.
